Here’s an up close look at the Cold Steel GI Tanto fixed blade knife and sheath. I’ve personally been wanting to get my hands on one of these since I saw the video on the Cold Steel website. I put the video at the end of this post, if you haven’t seen it yet, it’;s worth a look. These photos were taken minutes after the knife arrived here in the mail and I have not used this knife in the field yet. This is simply a photo review of the knife and some of my thoughts.
This knife is advertised as 1055 carbon steel, hardened and spring tempered. “A tactical knife stripped down to it’s bare essentials”. The blade measures 7″ and the overall length is 12″ . The Cold Steel site states the blade thickness is 4mm. I measured the blade thickness on this knife and it is exactly .160″ .
The scales are polypropylene and they are removable. Cold Steel mentions that the handles can be removed so the knife could be lashed to a pole and used as a spear. I actually could envision a nice set of custom maple or hickory scales on this knife. This knife is imported. As you can see by the blade stamping, Cold Steel doesn’t hide the fact that this knife is manufactured in China.
The sheath is simple and effective. It holds the knife securely even without the upper retention strap. The knife can only be inserted into the sheath one way but, if you’re a lefty, you can remove the belt loop and switch it to the other side of the sheath. The knife does not rattle inside of the sheath.
I am impressed with this one. This knife has the potential to be a pretty decent camp knife even though it’s considered a throwing knife. It’s somewhat large but it’s not heavy or awkward in the hand. I was really expecting it to be heavier, Cold Steel lists it’s weight at 10.6 ounces. I just might keep this knife in my wife’s go-bag, it’s lighter than the Ontario that is kept in there now.
Right now, this knife is priced under $40.00. When you look at all the knives in that price range, the GI Tanto does stand out. I originally wanted to do a multiple knife review since there are two other large tanto fixed blades on the market right now priced as low as this one. The other two knives are stainless steel and I just don’t think they would measure up to the Cold Steel.
You can find this knife on Amazon, they usually have the best everyday price:
